TikTok Shop sellers working with affiliate creators. Before and after the show. Intermediate. 7-min read.
Many TikTok Shop sellers start with affiliates by sending samples, and a frequent complaint is that creators accept a sample and never post. TikTok Shop has tools for this: a score that shows which creators follow through, posting rules for free samples, refundable samples that need no approval, and reminders. Use them together and track every sample like a cost.
Rules Creators Work Under
- Free samples: creators who have made TikTok Shop sales in the last 120 days can request them, subject to your approval. The creator guide asks them to post a public short video or a 10-minute LIVE with the product link within 14 days of receiving the sample. Overdue free samples keep using the creator's sample limit until they post.
- Refundable samples: any eligible creator can buy the product and get a full refund, including shipping and tax, once their content drives your sales goal within 120 days. TikTok says sellers usually set 1 to 3 orders. No seller approval is needed, and these do not count against the creator's free sample quota.
Steps
- Check Creator Sample Score before you approve. In Affiliate Center, the score rates creators on fulfillment (how reliably they post for samples), diligence, sales ability and content quality. Creators need 30 or more days in the affiliate program to have one.
- Use your outreach quota on relevant creators. Invites and messages to new, unconnected creators share one weekly quota, based on your last 30 days of sales and refreshed every Sunday. New sellers with no sales get a one-time pack of 1,000 outreach opportunities. Creators who already replied or added your product to their showcase are not limited.
- Offer refundable samples for untested creators. You set the sales goal, and the creator only gets the product free if their content sells.
- Send a short brief with every free sample. Include the product's main use, one or two hooks you have seen work in your own videos, and the claims they must not make.
- Send the reminder on day 5. The Sample Requests "In Progress" tab has a Notify button. Reminders can go out 5 days after delivery, once per sample, and include the product name and due date. The feature is in beta, so not every seller has it.
- Track each sample as a cost. Record creator, product, sample cost and the shipping TikTok deducted. In the settlement report, sample shipping sent through TikTok shipping appears as a "Logistics deduction".
- Match sales back to creators. Affiliate commission per order is (product price excluding tax − seller discount) × commission rate. Add it to the sample cost to see what each creator really cost you.
- Raise commission carefully. When you raise a rate, creators already promoting the product get it immediately. When you lower it, they keep the old rate for 30 days.
- Stop sending to creators who do not post. Creator Sample Score is built from past fulfillment, and your quota is better spent on creators who follow through.
Worked Example
Example: you send 10 free samples. Each costs $8 in product and $5 in shipping, so $130 in total. Commission is 15% on a $25 product with no seller discount, so $3.75 per order.
- 4 creators post and drive 12 orders between them.
- Sample cost per order: $130 ÷ 12 = $10.83.
- Commission plus sample cost per order: $3.75 + $10.83 = $14.58 on a $25 sale, before referral fee and product cost.
If the same 10 samples had gone only to creators with a strong fulfillment score and 8 posted, driving 24 orders, sample cost would fall to $5.42 per order. Track these numbers per creator for a month before deciding the channel does not work.
Common Mistakes
- Approving every sample request without checking the score.
- Sending samples with no brief and no due date.
- Counting a creator as profitable from their sales alone, without sample and commission costs.
- Spending all outreach quota on cold invites in the first days of the week.
