The number on your Seller Center dashboard is sales, not money you keep. Fees, affiliate commission, shipping, free samples and refunds are taken out in different places and at different times. The fix is to work from one file, the settlement report, and add the two costs TikTok does not know about: what the product cost you and what you spent on ads.

Steps

  1. Download the settlement report. In Seller Center, go to Finances > Statements (or Payouts), click Export, pick a date range, then download it from Export History. It is an Excel file with 5 spreadsheets.
  2. Work from the Order details sheet. It breaks each settled order down to the SKU, with net sales, shipping, fees and adjustments in separate columns. Total settlement amount = Net sales + Shipping + Fees + Adjustment amount.
  3. Check the referral fee against the formula. Referral fee = rate × (customer payment + platform discount − tax). The base includes the shipping the customer paid. Most categories are 6%. In Collectibles, any portion of a sale over $10,000 is charged 3%.
  4. Check affiliate commission per order. Affiliate commission = (product price excluding tax − seller discount) × commission rate. It sits in the Fees column with affiliate partner and shop ads commission.
  5. Find your sample costs. Shipping you paid on free samples sent through TikTok shipping shows as a "Logistics deduction" adjustment. Add the product cost of each sample from your own records, and tag each sample with the creator and product it went to.
  6. Count refunds where they land. When an order is refunded, TikTok returns the referral fee minus a refund administration fee of 20% of that fee, capped at $5 per SKU. The refund itself comes out of your balance or your next payout.
  7. Remember what is not settled yet. The report only includes settled orders. Orders still waiting sit under Finance > On hold, so a recent week will always look light.
  8. Add your own costs. For each SKU, add product cost, packaging, and the label cost if you ship yourself. Add ad spend for the same dates from your ads account.
  9. Divide by units to get profit per product. Do this per SKU, and again per creator for affiliate orders, so you can see which creators pay back their samples.

Worked Example

Example, using TikTok's published formulas. A buyer pays $30 for the item plus $5 shipping. No platform discount; tax is left out of the base.

  • Referral fee: 6% × $35 = $2.10
  • Affiliate commission at 20%: 20% × $30 = $6.00
  • Your product cost (example): $8.00
  • Your label cost (example): $5.00

Profit on this order before samples and ads: $35.00 − $2.10 − $6.00 − $8.00 − $5.00 = $13.90.

Now add one free sample sent to that creator: $8.00 product plus $5.00 shipping is $13.00. If that creator drives 4 orders, the sample costs $3.25 per order and profit falls to $10.65. If they drive 1 order, profit falls to $0.90.

If that $30 order is later refunded, TikTok keeps 20% of the $2.10 referral fee, which is $0.42, on top of whatever the refund costs you in product and shipping.

Early Settlement and Cash Flow

If you used Early Settlement, TikTok paid up to 90% of eligible order value as early as the day after shipment, minus a 0.5–1% service fee that is not refunded. When each order completes, that advance is deducted as "Early Settlement recovery". If one order's earnings do not cover it, the rest comes out of later orders. That can make payouts look like zero for a while after you opt out, even though you were paid earlier.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating GMV as income. Fees, commission and refunds come out later.
  • Forgetting that the referral fee includes buyer-paid shipping.
  • Tracking samples only as a count, not as product plus shipping per creator.
  • Judging last week's profit before its orders have settled.

Checklist

  • Settlement report exported for a full month
  • Order details sheet filtered by SKU
  • Referral fee and affiliate commission checked against the formulas
  • Logistics deductions for samples matched to creators
  • Refund admin fees and refunds counted
  • Product, packaging, label and ad costs added
  • Profit per SKU and per creator worked out
