New streamers in their first 10 shows. Before and during the show. Beginner. 7-min read.
A first show with almost nobody watching is not a verdict on you or your stock. Whatnot ranks shows using signals about buyers and sellers, and a new account has few of those signals yet. You can add them on purpose: the right category, a show buyers can find early, people you bring yourself, and a buyer experience that earns repeat visits.
How Whatnot Surfaces Shows
Whatnot says its feeds use signals such as a viewer's followed and implied interests, how they have interacted with you and your top category, and the quality of the experience you give buyers. That quality includes show quality, listing quality, time to drop off shipments, refund rate and cancellation rate. Your show format and category also affect where you appear.
The For You feed only includes live shows, not scheduled ones. Category feeds show live content for that category, so a show in the wrong category reaches the wrong people.
Steps
- Choose one primary category and format. When you schedule a show, it only appears in the category you select. If you sell several product types, pick the main one. Formats and tags must be accurate.
- Schedule shows in advance and keep a pattern. Whatnot lists going live frequently among its tips for better discoverability. A regular day and time also gives followers a reason to come back.
- Stock the show before it starts. Add listings so buyers can browse and place pre-bids in advance, and add Show Notes so they know what to expect.
- Make a clear thumbnail. Use a vertical 9:16 image or video, 1080 × 1920 pixels. Without one, your profile photo is used.
- Share the show link early. Every scheduled or live show has a link that works for anyone. People without the app can open it in a browser and sign up. Share it in your groups, stories and existing customer lists so people can bookmark it.
- Rehearse first. Rehearsal Mode in the app lets you run a practice show with test buyers. New sellers may not see it until after their first live show.
- Test promotion with a small, fixed budget. Promote Full Show runs on an hourly budget for the whole stream. Boost gives up to 15 minutes of extra visibility for a key moment. Community Boost lets your past buyers fund a boost. You are only charged for impressions Whatnot delivers.
- Read the results, not the feeling. In Seller Hub > Marketing on whatnot.com, check impressions, taps, sustained watchers (stayed over 30 seconds), new followers and first-time buyers, and return on promotion spending.
- End with a raid. Raiding sends you and your viewers to another seller's live show and ends your stream. When another seller raids you, thank them in chat and welcome the new viewers.
- Protect the signals you control. Ship on time, describe items accurately and keep cancels and refunds low. These are part of what Whatnot uses to rank shows.
Worked Example
Whatnot's fees as of Oct 22, 2026: commission is 8% of the item price only at the Standard tier in most categories (4% for Coins & Money), and payment processing is 2.9% of the total order value plus $0.30 per order. Check the current fee page.
Example: a $10 item with $5 shipping, before tax. Commission is 8% × $10 = $0.80. Processing is 2.9% × $15 = $0.44, plus $0.30, so $0.74. You keep $8.46 of the $10 item price before your product cost, and the buyer's $5 goes to the label. If you paid $6 for the item, each sale at $10 makes $2.46. Know this number before you run $1 starts or spend on promotion.
Example: you spend $30 on Promote Full Show. If buyers who arrived through the promotion spend $45, the dashboard's return on promotion spending reads 150%. Compare that with your $2.46 per item margin, not with sales.
Common Mistakes
- Picking a broad category to get more views. Category feeds match shows to people who follow that category.
- Going live once a month and judging Whatnot on one show.
- Spending on promotion before you know your margin per item.
- Letting shipping slip while you focus on growth. Drop-off time and refunds feed discoverability.
