Why This Matters

A returning viewer already knows how your show works, trusts your descriptions and often knows what they want. Both platforms point to the same basics: go live on a consistent schedule, recognize the people who show up, and ask viewers to follow.

None of this is a trick. People come back when a show is easy to find, easy to join and worth their time, even on days they don't buy.

Steps

Before the show

  1. Pick set days and times, and stick to them. TikTok's LIVE Studio help says regularly scheduled LIVE sessions help attract and keep a steady audience, and suggests posting your schedule in your bio. A regular slot lets people build your show into their week.
  2. Schedule and share ahead. Whatnot suggests scheduling a show about a week in advance so viewers can bookmark it, and sharing it before you go live and again once you're live. When you start, followers and people who bookmarked the show get a notification. TikTok suggests posting at least one teaser video a day before and promoting it 2 hours before going LIVE.
  3. Give the show a clear title and thumbnail. Whatnot recommends a title that tells viewers what you're selling, a thumbnail that shows it and the correct category.

During the show

  1. Recognize regulars honestly. Whatnot's Go Live Guide suggests shouting out return viewers and buyers. Use what you really know: "Welcome back, Kai." If you remember what they asked about last time, mention it. If you don't remember, be friendly without pretending.
  2. Keep inside jokes open to newcomers. Small rituals, like a regular opening line or a weekly segment, make a show feel familiar. If a joke needs background, give it in one sentence so new people aren't shut out.
  3. Give value to people who don't buy. Explain how to check condition, what a detail means, or which option suits which buyer. Give honest opinions, clearly labeled as opinions. A viewer who learns something has a reason to come back.
  4. Ask viewers to follow before you finish. Whatnot's Go Live Guide says to guide new buyers to follow you for a heads-up on your next show. TikTok's help suggests a plain call to action such as asking viewers to hit the follow button if they're enjoying the show.
  5. End by saying when you're on next. "Same time Thursday, and I'll have the leather jackets then." That gives people a reason and a time to return.

Between shows

  1. Keep in touch the allowed way. Post clips and your schedule on your profile and social media. On Whatnot, don't send the same promo message or show link to all your connections by DM. Whatnot's Community Guidelines count that as spam. Also don't use Whatnot to promote shows on other platforms. That falls under its fee-avoidance rules.

Example: a weekly rhythm

Example plan for a two-show week.

Example
WhenWhat
MondaySchedule Tuesday and Thursday shows; share the links
Tuesday 7 PMShow. Open with the weekly "first look" segment. Ask new buyers to follow. Close with "Thursday at 7."
WednesdayPost a short clip from Tuesday plus Thursday's show link
Thursday 7 PMShow. Welcome back Tuesday's regulars by name. Close with next week's days.

Keep it the same for several weeks before you judge it.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing your schedule every week. Viewers can't build a habit around a moving target. Whatnot's guidelines also list excessive rescheduling as feature abuse.
  • Faking familiarity. Pretending to remember someone feels worse than a plain welcome.
  • Thanking regulars at the expense of everyone else. A long list of names makes newcomers feel like outsiders. Be specific, then bring the room back to the product.
  • Overusing a catchphrase. A ritual is one line at the start or end, not every 30 seconds.
  • Mass DMs. On Whatnot, sending your show link to all connections counts as spam.
  • Promising viewers a deal next time that you can't deliver. Only mention offers that are real and authorized.

Quick Checklist

  • Show days and times are set and posted
  • Next show is scheduled and shared before I go live
  • Title, thumbnail and category are clear
  • I welcomed returning viewers by name, without faking it
  • I taught at least one useful thing that doesn't require buying
  • I asked new viewers to follow
  • I ended with the next show's day and time
  • No mass DMs, no pushing people to other platforms
