For: streamers whose chat moves faster than they can read, and owners setting up moderators.

Why This Matters

Chat is where buyers ask the questions that decide whether they bid or buy. But you also have a product in your hands and other people watching. If you chase every message, the show stalls. If you ignore chat, people feel unheard and leave.

The answer is a rhythm: explain one detail, check chat, answer, come back to the product.

Steps

  1. Set up help before the show. On Whatnot, the streamer, co-hosts and moderators can use show management tools. On TikTok, you can add up to 20 moderators per LIVE in Settings > Moderators; they can mute or block users. Brief your moderator: flag questions, welcome newcomers, and repeat key info in chat.
  2. Use the tools that surface questions. On Whatnot, tap the caret (^) above chat to filter by Questions, Buyers, Mods or Muted. Questions are also highlighted in yellow. On TikTok, Seller University recommends responding to comments in real time and running polls or Q&A sessions.
  3. Answer out loud, then show. Say the name and the question so the whole room hears it: "Maya, you asked about the size. Let me bring the tag closer." One answer can help several people.
  4. Prioritize. Answer questions that affect someone's decision first: size, condition, shipping, what's included. Small talk can wait.
  5. Queue what you can't answer yet. "I'll show the size first, then the comparison." Viewers know you've seen them, and you don't try to do three things at once.
  6. Say when you don't know. "I want to check that before I answer." Don't guess. Whatnot requires accurate descriptions of condition and value.
  7. Include quiet viewers and newcomers. Welcome new people by name. On Whatnot, the viewer list shows who's watching, and the @ button tags them in chat. Ask a simple product question anyone can answer, like "Which color should I show next?", without asking anyone why they haven't bought.
  8. Handle a rude comment briefly. Don't argue or turn it into entertainment. Mute or remove the person with your moderation tools, then go back to the product. Whatnot's Community Guidelines prohibit harassment.
  9. Keep the conversation on the platform. Answer in the show. Don't ask people to DM you for links or move a sale elsewhere. Whatnot prohibits soliciting off-platform transactions and redirecting buyers to other platforms. It also counts sending the same unsolicited message to many users, such as a show link to all your connections, as spam.

Example: five comments in one minute

Example. Simulated chat during a sneaker show.

Chat: "Hi, first time here" / "Can you show the soles?" / "Do you have size 10?" / "I'm back!" / "Is this the same as the last pair?"

Streamer: "Welcome, Jordan, first time here, glad you came. And welcome back, Kai. I'm showing the soles now, here they are, light wear on the heel. Size 10, I'll check the rack after this pair. And is it the same as the last one? Different colorway, same model. I'll hold them side by side in a second."

That's one answer that covers five people, and the product stayed on screen the whole time.

Common Mistakes

  • Answering every message as it arrives. You lose the item and the room loses you. Use a rhythm.
  • Saying names without answering. A username with no answer doesn't make anyone feel heard.
  • Reading chat silently. If you answer a question without saying it out loud, other viewers don't know what you're responding to.
  • Repeating the same thank-you line over and over. A long list of names and thanks crowds out the product. Be specific, then move on.
  • Talking faster and louder when chat speeds up doesn't help. Slow down and answer one thing at a time.
  • Inviting people to DM you for deals. On Whatnot that can break the off-platform and spam rules.

Quick Checklist

  • Moderator briefed (flag questions, welcome people, handle rude comments)
  • Questions filter turned on (Whatnot)
  • I repeat each question out loud before I answer
  • I answer decision questions first
  • I queue extra questions and come back to them
  • I welcome newcomers and returning viewers by name
  • I say "let me check" instead of guessing
  • No DMs for links, no off-platform sales
