How To Calculate Packaging Cost Per Shipped Order

Compare packaging by what it costs to get the right product to the buyer safely—including time, freight, and wasted space.

Takeaway

Packaging buying starts with the product and finishes with the packed order. The supplier’s unit price is one input along the way.

Operating methods and hypothetical examples are recommendations, not industry benchmarks or customer results. Shipping and cosmetics details are scoped to the platform, carrier and geography named beside each statement. Re-check the official sources before acting on them.

Supplier catalog links below are sourcing routes, not a claim that either is cheapest.

Shelving holding flat mailer boxes, padded envelopes and fragile-marked cartons

The box is cheaper. The order takes longer to pack. More filler goes inside. The finished parcel is larger than it needs to be.

You saved on the first line of the purchase order and paid for it somewhere else.

Packaging buying should start with the product and finish with the packed order. The supplier’s unit price is one input along the way.

Build A Small Set Of Packing Recipes

Group your common shipments by what they actually need: a flexible, non-fragile item; a crush-sensitive retail box; several small items that must stay identifiable; or a product with specific leakage or hazardous-material requirements.

For each group, define the approved outer packaging, protection, closure, and product arrangement. Check dimensions and weight on the completed parcel. A recipe should make the ordinary decision easy while telling the packer when to escalate an exception.

A mailer may suit some soft goods. It is not automatically suitable for a product whose retail box must arrive intact. Special shipping requirements take priority over a general recipe.

Test proposed packaging with representative products before buying deeply. Record what you tested and its limitations. An informal in-house handling test is useful screening; it is not a transport certification or a guarantee against damage.

Ask Suppliers For The Same Specification

Compare like with like: internal dimensions, material, protection, closure, pack quantity, freight, lead time, and usable storage footprint.

Catalog suppliers such as Uline and Paper Mart provide starting points for product comparisons. Also request quotes from local packaging distributors or corrugated manufacturers. These are sourcing routes, not a claim that one is cheapest.

Ask for samples or a small initial quantity where available. A discount on 5,000 units can be expensive if the team discovers after 50 that the fit is wrong.

Add The Costs The Box Price Misses

Hypothetical comparison: both options below are assumed suitable for the same ordinary product. The labor rate is an illustrative $18 per hour. Postage, damage claims, and other overhead are excluded and must be checked separately.

Hypothetical packaging comparison — illustrative figures only.
Per OrderOption AOption B
Outer packaging$0.38$0.52
Allocated inbound packaging freight$0.12$0.04
Protective material$0.18$0.08
Packing time60 seconds40 seconds
Packing labor$0.30$0.20
Compared cost$0.98$0.84

The higher-priced outer package costs less in this limited comparison. That does not make Option B universally better. Use your actual process, and investigate whether finished dimensions, postage paid by the business, or observed damage change the result.

Avoid turning an estimated damage rate into a confident saving. If you do not have evidence, record the uncertainty and run a controlled trial.

Reuse Packaging Deliberately

Create three destinations for incoming material: reusable, recyclable under your local collection rules, and unsuitable for either stream.

Reuse only packaging that remains appropriate for the contents and service. Reject compromised, dirty, wet, or contaminated material. Include the time spent inspecting and preparing it in the comparison. Keep accepted reusable packaging organized by size so the packer does not have to hunt through a pile.

Old shipping labels, markings, and barcodes must be removed or completely covered when reusing packaging. Apply whatever the new shipment actually requires. U.S. Postal Inspection Service packaging guidance.

Free USPS Priority Mail and Flat Rate packaging is not suitable for a Ground Advantage shipment. Whatnot’s Ground Advantage guidance explicitly calls for the seller’s own packaging rather than those service-specific supplies. Whatnot Ground Advantage guidance.

Do not describe a package as universally recyclable. Materials and local acceptance differ; confirm with the facility or collection provider serving you.
